Haiti Disaster Response 2010

We welcome your interest in volunteering to help provide medical relief in Haiti. We anticipate there will be three phases to Children’s Mercy’s response:

  1. Transport of earthquake victims who require care at Children’s Mercy.
  2. Deployment of teams to Haiti to address the immediate, acute needs of the injured and sick.
  3. After the acute phases, help in providing ongoing pediatric medical care in Haiti.
We are quickly gathering information about potential responders with advanced skills and experience in specific areas in the event that Children’s Mercy deploys health teams to the disaster site. Volunteers could possibly serve for 2-5 days as a member of a transport team, and up to 14 days as part of a critical care or surgical team. The timeframe for potential teams to depart is still unknown.

Please Note:
  • Conditions in Haiti as of January 21st, 2010 are extremely dangerous. Children’s Mercy only recommends staff go to Haiti with an established international organization that has the ability to provide for safety and security.
  • If contacted by NDMS, Children’s Mercy volunteers will travel with U.S. Government support. The situation in Haiti is extremely chaotic and stressful, so please consider your experience and ability to handle very difficult living conditions.
  • Food and water are in short supply, and access to food may be limited to military rations.
  • Communications are practically nonexistent, and you should expect to be unable to communicate with family and friends at home.
  • Your license must be current/valid to practice in the state of Missouri or Kansas.
  • A valid passport is required.
  • Please complete the survey with your availability by Monday, January 25th by 5:00 p.m. to be recommended to NACHRI for the initial teams. Please note that Haiti’s medical needs are expected to continue, so we will continue to accept surveys on an ongoing basis.
